What is Geoblocking?
eVisit's Geoblocking feature protects providers from seeing patients residing in states in which they are not licensed.
We use a couple of methods to determine the patient's location. Which method depends on the practice’s preference.
We may use the patient’s Internet Protocol (IP) address to show what state they are currently in upon logging into their eVisit account.
IP addresses are a way to identify each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. They allow us to know what state each address is in. If the IP address is not in a state the provider is licensed in, the patient cannot have a virtual care visit with them.
For example, if a provider is licensed only in Arizona and their availability is set as "Available" to accept "See Now" or scheduled visits, a patient who is currently in Arizona will be able to see the provider as available and can request a visit with the provider. If that same patient travels to California and attempts to request a visit with a provider, they will no longer show as an available provider because the patient's IP address is currently located in California.
The same goes for patients who don't normally reside in a state the provider is licensed in. If a California resident, who normally can not see an available provider, is on vacation in Arizona, the provider will appear as available to them for the duration of their time in Arizona.
We also provide a drop-down box for patients to select and confirm the state they are currently in.
Common issues:
A patient who is currently in the state we have licensed providers in is not able to see our providers.
-
Check to make sure the provider's status is set to "Available" or have scheduled availability set in the future.
-
Check if the provider or patient is using a (Virtual Private Network) VPN. VPNs can display an IP address that comes from a different state or even country and are notorious for causing issues with Geoblocking.
-
If the patient cannot see the providers after these two steps, please contact eVisit Support at 928-297-2294 to ensure the account is configured properly for Geoblocking.
We are seeing some patients request visits who have an address outside of my licensed state(s).
-
While the patient's address may be in a state a provider does not serve, the patient will be able to see them as available because they currently reside in a state and are eligible to be seen by a provider for the duration of their stay in that state.
